So Today I was wondering, what would your 400 time and 1600 time need to be at if you were looking to go sub 2 in the 800?

52-3 and
i run 4:37 and 50.6 (relay split) and have a 1:57 open 800 pr
Pretty decent calculator someone on here came up with before:
6/5(best 400m) + 1/5(best 1600m) = 800m time

55 and 4:30 gives 2:00 BTW.
I think I was around 53 and 4:42-4:45 when I broke 2.

There aren't any perfect comparisons--everyone's different, times don't correlate exactly, and some people are more naturally suited to the physical demands of the 800 than those of either the 400 or the 1600.
Also, it depends a lot on what you mean by "sub 2." I've seen guys with 400/1600 PRs of 52.5/4:55 get dragged to sub 2s in fast races. Those same kids would not be able to break 2 minutes running solo, and would not be able to run under 2 consistently.
To get dragged under 2, I'd say that 52.5/4:55 (if approaching from the speed side--hell, you could probably even be a little slower in the 1600) and 54/4:30 (if approaching from the distance side) are probably the absolute minimums. To solo sub 2s, I'd say one would want to be able to run 52/4:40 (speed-based) or 53.5/4:25 (distance).
I might be a little too harsh on the more distance oriented guys, but as someone who's known and worked with a lot of sub-2 high schoolers, I'd say that the speed component is the most important thing. I've known a ton of
Doesn't seem to be a bad guide.
I ran 55.0 and 4:20 which gives 1:58 - I was consistently under 2:00 and ran 1:57.5
Not sure I agree.
I remember when I was at school I had run 53.5 and 4:10 for the 1500m. I could solo 1:57s.
A lot of people on this board over estimate the speed required for the 800m. With specific 800m training, 54/55 seconds is plenty for sub 2. Even if your 1500/mile ability is not that good.
Funnily enough I never managed to run sub 60' for 400m despite I ran 4'16" for 1,500m.. I think I should concentrate on pure/raw speedwork as the endurance engine seems to be fine..
My 400m pb was 56.7 for 400 flat when I ran 159.9 for 800. A few months later I ran a 405 1500m and 2 weeks later ran 159.9 again
So around 55-56 for 400 and 400-410 for 1500m I'd say
I was at about 55 and 4:40 when I ran 1:59.2. I'm looking to get down that low again this year.

I do think that 55/4:30 is a pretty good estimate. Roughly: for every second you add or subtract to the 400m time, you probably need to adjust the 1600m by about 5-7 seconds. For example a 54/4:35 kid would likely get the job done or even a 50.xx/5:00 type.
Of course, this doesn't always work for everyone or even come close. For example, 800m happened to be my sweet spot in HS. I ran 2:00.9 in the open and dipped under 2:00 as a leadoff on the 3200 relay a couple of times. I also raced the 1600 frequently and never went faster than 4:39. You would think that this would make me a speed type; alas, my fastest 400m split was 55.7. Strange.
