Are 800m/mile guys usually expected to do well in XC? The 4/8 types typically aren't, at least that's what it seems from the general opinion on these boards. I'm an 8/16 guy who isn't great at cross, in addition to totally hating it.

I assume that you haven't done much aerobic training considering you must be a high school sophomore (junior)? You don't know whether you're an 8/16 guy yet. Not running cross will not help you on the track; running it will help your endurance and certainly won't harm your running. Cam Levins thought he was an 800/1500 guy in high school because he ran 1:56 but only 4:12 or so for the 1500. He ended up being very clearly a 10000 runner. You don't know what you'll be.

That's really interesting actually. How did he eventually find out he was a 10k guy?
In my case the issue is not quitting XC because I think I'm a mid-D guy. There's really no reason to do that. I have considered it in the past and decided to stay with it despite hating the racing. Mostly because my team is getting better and I want to be a part of it during a good period, but I digress. My main question was about what the expectation is for the real 8/mile types who already know what they are, whether that be in college or still in HS.
Tbh, if I found out today that I could only run the 5k and longer for the rest of my career, I would probably quit the sport.
