obviously, alan webb is another species and had more natural talent than any other highschooler, or caucasion runner the world has ever seen. we are all aware of that.
however, since fly-wire and pebax plates have been invented by nike, especially in the last 5-6 years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of highschoolers running under 405 for the mile/1600 meters.
when I was in highschool in the early 2000's, the lightest spike on the market weighed 6 ounces. since then, we have the zoom victory which weighs under 4 ounces. physics has proven that lighter means faster and is less weight that you have to lug around the track 4 times. how often do you see a miles running the race in timberland boots that weigh 5 pounds?
so heres the questions..........
do you ever wonder how much faster YOU could have ran for the mile during your prime if you had access to 3.9 ounce spikes?
do you ever wonder how much faster WEBB would have ran hath he had access to 3.9 ounce spikes during his prime?
bottom line......runners are not getting better. technology is getting lighter and therefore faster. work ethic.....for the most part.....is going down hill.
