Didn't Verzbicas run his under pretty adverse conditions? Windy day in a high school race or some such? If I'm recalling that correctly, he was probably better than the raw time would indicate.
Verzbicas did run it in an all-HS race, but it was the Dream Mile, so it was a gathering of some of the best HSers. That being said, it was windy and raining, so conditions were quite sub-par.
Of all the individuals listed above, Verzbicas, Liquori, and Danielson could undoubtedly have run faster under less sub-par conditions.
Tracks:
- Liquori and Danielson had to deal with crappy 1960s tracks, while Verzbicas, Maton, and Fisher had nice, modern tracks.
Weather:
- No knowledge of the weather during Liquori and Danielson's runs.
- Verzbicas, as mentioned previously, was getting rained on.
- Unless I'm remembering wrong, Maton and Fisher both had near-perfect weather.
Pacing:
- I have no knowledge of the pacing in Liquori and Danielson's races.
-In Verzbicas' race, the pacer was terrible and brought the field through in 57 and 2:02, and Verzbicas had to run something like a 1:57 800m to break 4.
- Maton's race had fantastic pacing from Fleet and Miner with 1:01/2:00
- Fisher's race had fantastic pacing from Stockberger with 1:00/2:00.
Overall, it's likely that on the day of their Sub-4s, Maton and Fisher did as well as they could feasibly do, and Verzbicas, Liquori, and Danielson could all have done better.
