Good luck trying to get anything out of Ritz regarding Salazar. He needs to protect his legacy as an athlete and his family.
he wanted to move back to Michigan
I viewed it as slowly transitioning toward retirement. He wanted to move back home and begin coaching while still training. That is not uncommon. I thought he said Salazar was still writing his workouts, or at least working as a mentor.
Not a smart move in an Olympic year. The trials are in a couple weeks. He should have waited until after the games to make an announcement.
When will they ever learn?
Nobody leaves the firm. ever.

why?
When you're done its generally mental as well as physical.
You guys are nuts. Rupp and Ritz are going to work together to 35km as a long steady tempo run, then each man to his own over the final 7km.
Salazar will once again have 2 athletes on the podium.
Ritz never said it straight up, but it was clear that he did not want to train as hard as Salazar wanted him to. Ritz had said that he wanted to dial down his training with the primary goal of staying healthy and the secondary goal being race preparation. He thought that he could have been more competitive at some races if he wasn't always so beat up from training.
Ritz has a good chance to make the team specifically because he is no longer overtraining. A smart 80-90 beats a stupid 120 and for Ritz, 120 is stupid and unnecessary.

My guess is that there were positive reasons for his moving, as well as negative.
Ritz has said repeatedly that he wanted to be close to his and his wife's family after they had kids. He's also a smart guy and could see his running career ending eventually, and he wanted to get into coaching. So the move made sense in a positive way from a family and professional perspective.
There were also negatives from being in Portland, as you say. Ritz was ultimately just another domestique for Rupp like all the other guys in NOP. NOP resources benefited Ritz for a while and so did Alberto's intensity, but then the intensity got him injured, and I'm sure he wanted more flexibility in deciding his own workouts. I also always get the feeling that Ritz is his own man with his own training ideas. At this point in his career, I'm sure he's more than capable of designing his own training. Unless you are capable of being an Alberto disciple, I expect it quickly gets old being being coached by Alberto.
1. Kibet
2. Rupp
3. Chelanga
His family is more important than his career. He moved to a much better place to raise a family, and GVSU's indoor facility is much better than anything they have indoors in Portland. After one year of living and training in GR, he had one of his best marathons ever leading the Boston Marathon through 22 miles.

Did Ritz ever explain why he left Salazar? Are they on good terms? I hope Ritz beats Rupp. I still think Ritz will hit one of his final marathons out of the park. He has a 2:05 in him, given his 5000 personal best.
I heard they are NOT on good terms and that Salazar wanted Ritz to wear the NOP singlet at Boston last year but Ritz refused. If you are Ritz, you have to irate that your name is now being drug through the mud because of the Epstein/BBC report and you have had to pay money to lawyer up for USADA.

i agree with you. Ritz is a freak talent and doesn't need extra miles. all he needs is a few years of consistent training and simple workouts. a 90% fit Ritz is probably better than all but 2-3 U.S. marathonersi remember some quote of Ritzenhein's coach after he'd been injured a long time and ran a tune up race just under 14:00. his old coach said something like, "he just walks around in sub 14:00 shape even when he's not training"

Are we 100% sure he is even clean? He gives off that vibe but nobody knows for sure. How did he not know what Sal was up to? He wasn't very discreet. He tested the cream on his own kid.

This happened over two years ago bud. Try to stay current with the news before preaching to everyone else.
He moved to a much better place to raise a family,
whoah! Isn't Portland a great place to raise a family?
It wasn't the miles it was the crazy intervals Salazar had Ritz doing trying to keep up with Mo and Rupp as they prepared for London. Ritz was fried and Salazar pretty much admitted it. Ritz also had to play along with a race strategy in the London 10,000 that benefited Mo and Rupp but left him with no chance to medal. Ritz should have been pushing from at least 5k out not making one big move with a k to go just to get swallowed up.
