Calf Injury - Please Help!!

    Hi guys,

    I'm looking for some help shaking a series of calf injuries that have been plagueing me for the last couple of years.

    I first got the injury a couple of years ago during XC season, and it was down to way too much racing, maybe 14-15 times in twelve weeks. I was doing pretty heavy mileage at the time (or at least heavy for me, between 65-75 miles per week), and am sure that just made things worse.

    Since then, I've taken time off, done yoga, pilates, cross training in form of weights, rock climbing etc, and I'm still having trouble. I also use a foam roller and stretch, and have the occasional sports massage (as and when I can afford it).

    However, even doing all this, I still can't seem to shake my injuries. I can maybe get a few weeks in before they come back with a vengeance. I get anything from shin splints to calf strains, through to tendonitis in my Achilles.

    If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.

    deep squats almost all the way to the floor with a wide stance.

    I have been having a lot of calf trouble and the only thing that has been able to help me so far is an ART (active release technique) doctor. They are not super common but the guy by me is great and really has helped me and my calf problems significantly.

    Fundamentally, you need to strength all the tissues in your lower legs from your toes to your feet to your ankles, up to your calves. This includes all the bones, tendons, muscles and ligaments below your knees.

    I've had a lot of feet and calf problems through the years but I seem to have avoided any foot, ankle or calf problems in the last 3 years.

    (1) First you need to get rid of the injury through the use of massage. I suggest that you fill the bathtub with hot water, (very hot, just below the scalding point), then stand on a old towel outside the bathtub and coat your legs with corn oil (cooking oil) and get get in the bath and massage the hell out of your legs for about 10 minutes. It's going to leave a mess in the bathtub when you are all done so get some dishwashing soap and clean it up.

    (2) If you are getting injured on one leg and not the other, it means that your alignment is off. Something is mis-aligned in your hips or back. Get yourself a damned good Chiropractor and have him or her get you into good alignment.

    (3) STRENGTHEN your feet and lower legs by WALKING for hours and hours in either Vibram Five-Fingers or Merrell Vapor Gloves. This might take a year to get your feet and lower legs sufficiently strong, but it's worth it in the long run.
