The traditional training regime for middle distances and above seems to be intervals 2-3 times a week and long runs the other days. For people that double up training, this tends to be 3 interval sessions a week plus up to 11 runs a week also.
My question is this, why not do far more specific interval sessions? They are more specific to the sport than going out for a jog, and less harmful to joints and tendons than a hard run.
These do not need to be intense, but will be specific to a required pace. You are supposed to feel like you could have done more repetitions afterwards. It is unnecessary to perform all these sessions all on the track.
For example, a 1500m runner may do the following (winter):
Mon (easy): 5 x 1km @ 5k pace with adequate rest
Tues (hard): 15 x 200m @ 1500m pace, 45s rest
Wed (easy): 5 x 600m @ 3k pace with adequate rest
Thurs (hard): 8 x 400m @ 1500m pace, 1:30 rest
Fri (easy): 6 x 1.6km (or mile) @ 10k pace adequate rest
Sat (hard): 5 x 300m @ 800m pace, 3:00 rest
Sun: Rest
Far less volume, but lots more quality without being intense.
