Dead last in a race that Ches won in 3:57. Anyone see the race? What happened to the former sub-4 high schooler?

He's still a sub-4 high schooler - you can't take that from him. Also, it's January. Relax.

I'm not trying to take anything away from him. I'm asking about him because I want him to do well, and was surprised at such a poor result. That's why I want to hear from someone who saw the race. If, for instance, he tried to hang on the leaders, died hard sometime after the half, and then jogged it in, that's different than getting dropped from the gun. I hope and expect that he'll still have a fine season.

It's pretty good for submasters. What's 4:17 worth age graded?
I watched the race on cable.
He was around 4-5 up until about 1/2 way(maybe a bit before that) and he started to fade. The pace wasn't outrageously fast, they were actually slower than ches wanted for the first 1/2 at around 2:01 I think the announcer said.
He started to fade a bit, and fell back until he was off the end. Not sure at that point whether he decided to just finish easy or he was struggling for that as he wasn't in the picture anymore.
For him to run that slow he is either sick, burnt from heavy training etc.
Hopefully nothing serious is up!.
As an aside Haney looked very strong/comfortable.
must be sick as he made a very strong transition to college xc.
Also interesting in these results is Andres Arroyo having run 4:15, just three places ahead of Maton.

Dumb reply.
Looks like he died off in the second half of the race.

Freshman 10? Or is it Freshman 15 these days?
Haney had a tough indoor season his first year at Oregon as well. Haney didn't have as strong of a cross season, or high school PRs, as Maton but opener with 4:15 before shutting it down indoors. He bounced back to 3:41 opener outdoors, 3rd at NCAAs and was the U.S. Junior champ. Maton is likely just adjusting to training. He'll be fine.

It's never been freshman 10. Always 15.
Is his mother advising him???

Never his mother, Parker Stinson coached him. He will have another good season, bet on it. Maybe sub 4, again. At least under 4:03.
Who is Parker Stinson
Some famous coach I have never heard off

We;ve all had absolute disasters of races.
I once had a 5k 2 minutes slower than my pr and I was going all out.
Bad days happen, even for phenoms.

While people on LR do throw this around willy-nilly, it should be pointed out that Maton's case would not qualify him as an age cheat.
He was older than normal in HS, but age-cheating would have required him to claim he was an age that he wasn't.
It doesnt matter how fast he runs, hes dating Alexa Efraimson. Dude is a legend because of that
