Hi everyone! As the subject line suggests, I'd like to BQ. I've got a lot of doubts about if I can, though. I'm 31 and I've run a dozen or so 5ks and a few half marathons since graduating from college, mostly to keep in shape. I feel like I've never had a fast day in my life, though, and lately I've been wanting to change that.
I followed a half marathon plan a few years ago while working at Lowes and felt awesome - finished in 1:55 off a peak week of 40 miles with a peak long run of 14 miles. Since then I've gotten a data entry job, so I'm not on my feet nearly as much. I've finished three more half marathons off of inconsistent training, all in the 2:00-2:05 range, and I typically run 24-25 minute 5ks a few times a year. Last year I followed the Advanced Marathoning 55mpw plan up to the first 20-miler and then really started struggling, passed the halfway mark in a marathon in 2:05 but I turned back at mile 15 because of ankle and foot arch pain - my shoes were ancient and practically falling apart, the course had a rocky/gravelly section, too - but because I was able to finish a 20-mile training run I think I can BQ.
Any advice on getting from a 2 hour half marathon to a 3 hour full one? I'm just about to lace up and go finish week 5 of Faster Road Racing's 45-mile base training.
