Is there a study that shows the difference in race pace vs. the weight of a runner's shoe?
i.e. Assuming one can handle the lighter shoe without his body breaking down, what would be the expected drop in pace by dropping an oz of shoe weight. e.g. 5:00/mile 10K pace with 7 oz flats would be worth what in 6 oz flats?
i'd be interested to hear this too. if i train in a 11oz shoe and what would that same effort be worth with a 9oz shoe.
There is an anecdotal rule, 1 lb is 2 seconds per mile. Using that 1 ounce would be 0.125 seconds per mile.
That doesn't work here because the mechanics of weight on your feet are different from weight on your body. You don't just have to move the weight up and down, but also swing it at the end of your legs.
Jack Daniels studied it a while back. You can look online for it if you want. He found a 1% negative effect on time for 100 grams, or .28% per ounce.
The adidas adios shows that weight is not everything- most would not argue that you are going to run faster in the 8.1 oz adios than almost every other lighter shoe. Even the non-boost adios was "heavy" compared to other flats. Responsiveness, ground feel, race like fit, etc are going to matter more. Example: Nike free 3.0 is lighter than adidas adios. Ever tried to run fast in Nike free shoes- good luck

I agree, personal feel matters a lot. I really like the adizero adios boost (the 2.0) and have raced well in them, but my buddies hate them.

Any similar information on surface vs pace? e.g. Asphalt vs Hard packed dirt.
I dont think it really makes much difference but its more a psychological thing. Is with me anyway. Nike Zoom Streak LT 2's all the way!
Sand for instance it much slower than asphalt. Definitely not just mental.

4) Loose Dirt +10
5) Hard Packed Sand +15
6) Soft Sand +60
