In a USATF interview he declares he is running both marathon and at least 10k and possibly 5k.

Looking to double?!

Well done. Of course, this is old news to anyone reading my threads about Galen doing a 180-degree turn on a run, running at 10 am, looking at his watch, running on asphalt, and wearing pants indoors - all dead giveaways.
Holy crap, they were right...
Awesome! This is the right move. Prediction:
1. Rupp
2. Meb
3. Ritz
That's the best team the US could possible send to Rio.
Didn't think this was going to happen...This makes the Trials much more interesting.
The race will do a .2 share for sure now.
The rest of the marathoners entered just collectively shat themselves
Glad to see it.
Go Galen.

Ew
He says his focus is still on the 10K. Almost sounds like he's running the trials so that he has the marathon as a backup.
It is a very real possibility, in my view, that Rupp will qualify, take a spot on the team, but DNS the marathon in Rio. That would a be real shame.
Now it's going to be interesting. Knowing AlSal, I suspect Rupp will just sit on the leaders until the last kilometer before trying to go for the win. I really hope there is a big enough pack of runners that can stay together the last six miles to make it interesting. I would love to see a pack with Estrada, Rupp, Meb, Ritz, and Puskedra trading surges the last few miles instead of say Rupp, Meb and Ritz jogging along the last few miles before someone takes a shot at the win.
Dns. Heard it here first.
Awesome! Great interview too. Looks like having a coach with a LONG TERM DEVELOPMENT PLAN is the way to go.
Too bad Derrick isn't running.
Rupp-approved is Zátopek-approved.
Can't think of a downside here. He was going to make the move to the marathon eventually, Americans have this idea of waiting too long to make that move. The East Africans are showing that you don't need to run for a decade on the track before you move to the marathon.
It's a good idea. This is Galen's last realistic shot at an Olympic medal. He'll be 34 at the 2020 Olympics. The 10k is his "A" race. The only question was what would be his "B" race? Galen probably has a better chance at medaling in a tactical marathon than a tactical 5k.

I at least see him starting the Marathon in Rio unless he decides to try again for the 10/5 double. There are 8 days between the 10000 and the Marahton, which might be enough to recharge a bit. If he is to go for that double, do not expect him to race at all for 4-6 weeks prior to the 10000m
Isn't the downside (for Rupp) that he will miss out on the big appearance fee he would have gotten from one of the major marathons for making his 26.2 debut there? I'm sure he'll still command high fees later on, but you would think he would get extra for debuting somewhere.
why wouldn't do that? He should sit wherever he needs to outkick whoever for 3rd place and make team without the risk of blowing up.
