Eugene 2021 will spend $6 million on music festival, but only $7.2 million for prize money?

If tax payer money is being used to fund this...it seems a music festival will benefit the public more than prize money that will leave with the athletes.

Why pay athletes? Most run for minimum wage already.

The only question is how much of the budget ends up in official's pockets.

The IAAF sets the prize money amount.

Let's raise taxes on tourists to fund an event that is meant to attract tourists! We can justify misusing the tax system by saying "economic growth" a million times!

How much to rent the Portland Convention Center, airfare, accommodations for 5,000 national Princesses, Princes, Admirals, and Generals of the IAAF?

Nike can pay the athletes...don't put the good Oregon taxpayers on the hook to enrich the wealthy.

I'm assuming by 'prizes' they mean that's the budget for all the medals and ceremonies across all the sports. Since when did athletes get cash prizes from the IOC for Olympic gold?

NBC has drive up I-5 a dozen big rigs worth $100 Million from L.A. NBC has to house 250 TV ex-cons (aka crewmembers), plus fly-in from LAX: Ato, Rafer, Jackie, Caitlyn, Bobby, John, and Carl. That's why the broadcasts from Hayward always appear to be from the San Fernando Valley when it should look like Eugene :={

Most broadcasts are a combination of paying for a broadcast slot that the station approves, then selling advertising in your broadcast slot. Very rarely does the networks pay for content up-front.

What's great about this scheme is the IAAF makes money every way possible. The future of sport is securing broadcast rights, not athletes or specific events.

Can you tell me why NBC would want to pay anything to have this shown on television?

Because they could then turn around and sell advertising in excess of what they paid for the content, thereby turning a profit. Pretty sure that's how it works for major sports like football and basketball where the major networks bid against each other. But it sounds like it works a different way. Apparently NBC gets the content and production costs for free and pockets all the ad revenue. In effect the organizing committee pays a ton of money to the IAAF for broadcast rights that there really isn't a demand for.
