I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet. It looks like Chris Derrick will be running the Jacksonville half marathon. Will he be running the marathon trials in February or just busting a Galen rupp and just jumping in?

Derrick should be running the marathon but I doubt that he will.
Can you imagine how different the dynamic of the OTM could be? One scenario has Rupp and Derrick, two 10k monsters, stepping up to what in all likelihood would be their best event. The other has a 40 year old (albeit a VERY VERY good one) as the favorite. Rupp and Derrick taking a stab at the marathon would be huge.
here is the link to the facebook event page. there should be an entry list on there but derrick was added a couple of days ago.
US Mens Marathoning is super weak right now. May be best sport for Derrick.
Thanks for posting this. Perfect weather forecasted. Hard to imagine he has a marathon in mind after spending a good deal of last year injured.

It's probably the best way to come back.
I thought he retired

Yeah let's encourage runners to choose the easier medals and weaker competition.
realistically has no chance at 10k, might as well go for it. can still run 10k at trials if he thinks it's important to get that experience and wants to try to make 10k team in 2020
I Don't think Rupp will run the marathon trials, but if Derrick runs it would be very interesting with other debutants Diego Estrada and Chelanga.
Great topic! Actually there are a few things that have not been pointed out. The thing with Chris Derrick that many people do not know is that he physically can't go over 90-95 miles per week. He has a college injury that prevents from getting the necessary base needed to be an elite half/full marathon runner. I think it is something with his foot or ankle. This is true though. I will look for the article again. I am a big fan of Derrick. He was sick at Stanford and always threw down at NCAA's but could never get the W. Not too mention he is a bro.
Lastly, a half marathon is Jacksonville! Florida is having the hottest winter on record and i am currently here and doing 60 miles a week. It flat out sucks. I would be very impressed with anything under 1:02:30. Bottom line, unless he gets his injury under control I do not see him having a great half/marathon career.
I wonder if these guys are starting to think about the heat/humidity of Rio and want to do some hard efforts in similar conditions to acclimate? Too bad there's no half marathons in southern Louisiana...

Didn't he ride the pace vehicle at NYCM? Seems like if he does a marathon he would debut there.
Is the race Sunday? Looks like a high of 58, low of 48, perfect conditions. Also, 90-95 is perfectly adequate for an elite marathoner. Steve Jones and Yuki Kawauchi do/did less than that.

This is great. I think this is gamesmanship to its finest. Jerry's and Alberto's boys don't like each other. Alberto every 4 years takes the attention away from the marathoners by not revealing what Rupp is doing. Turnabout is fair play.
I think they should 100% mandate that people tell us, at least, a month out whether they intend to do the trials or not. You're either training for a marathon or you aren't. What's the point of secrecy? It's not like the other runners are going to change their training plans.
No chance at 10k?? Either you're insane, or haven't paid attention to CD's abilities since Stanford.

Have you even bothered to ask Derrick whether he plans on running the Trials?
