Jake Stewart from University of Illinois tweeted this. Haven't seen any other mention of it. Don't know why he would lie, though.
For my money, disappointing decision if true. The mile is totally irrelevant outside of the U.S.

This does appear to be true. Bring Back the Mile reports it passed, 221-169 with 17 absentions.
Okay, I don't know if it's official yet. USTFCCCA said it's just the first step to making it a reality.
Very disappointing if it is true
Not sure where I stand on this. If it somehow brings more attention - "fans in the stands" - in the US to track and field then I am all for it. I believe this is the prevailing thought behind it, but I'm not sure if it is a sound theory.
It won't at all. Such an idiotic decision.
Still needs to be approved by the NCAA before the change becomes offficial:

This. We are not going to start having thousands of fans at track meets because they are running the mile instead of the 1500.
What's next in this line of thinking? Demanding all field events be measured and announced in feet and inches instead of that confusing metric system?
Is this just division 1, or also d2 and d3?
Not a sound theory at all. There is already a mile indoors and no one cares. It does not bring more fans to meets.
This whole thing brings to light the clueless thought process of division 1 coaches. There is little question as to why programs are being dropped when these guys are who administrators see. They lack vision and make moves without thinking clearly about consequences.
Another sad day for track and field. If Pat Henry has his way then track and field will be dead before he is.
So, does this apply for D2 and D3 as well??

If I were to argue for the mile - which I'm lukewarm on, but not convinced - I'd say that it's more because it's indoors and less about the distance itself.
Same coaches that voted to make everyone who made NCAA's 1st, 2nd, or 3rd team All-American...so 24 in total. Argument has football as 2nd and 3rd team All-American, why dont we??? Maybe because you already name 8 All-American for each event...not 3 total like football does for each positon. They just wanted to pad they're resume more with that one.
We have all indoor to run the mile, and plenty of people break four minutes. Outdoor we should be in line with the rest of the world.
I think having the mile at indoors and some invites is good enough.
What with the "we should be like the rest of the world" crap? This is America. They should be like us (and most of them agree).
Stop destroying a better system because of your liberal shame.
The 1500m is a ridiculous race that has no place in the world of track and field.

The Olympics and WCs are international. America will never get them to change to "American" units.
1/10 BTW.
Well, if this is the case, maybe we will get a clear comparison of college milers' fitness indoors vs outdoors. And it would be interesting to see if the scores of runners who manage 3:44 find the extra couple seconds and go under 4.
It can also help those 3:41 1500 guys who "only" ran 4:01 for the mile indoors, when people ask, "So are you a sub 4 miler?" It always kind of irks me to hear someone who has never broken 4 claim an equivalent as the real thing.
Dumb. I'm going to start a bring back the 1500 campaign.
Thank god. Who cares if nobody runs the 1500outside the US, the mile is a far superior distance in general. 4 laps+ a little vs 3 3/4? Really, 3 3/4? Who comes up with this shit? I am aware that it is the 1.5 kilometer race, so why don't they make tracks in Europe 500m? Oh that's right, because all the races before 1500 depend on a 400m track! Plus there is no real barrier in the 1500. Can you imagine if it was the standard here in the U.S.? "Grant Fisher becomes 7th high school 1500 runner to break the 3:42.69 mark!" Wow! So exciting! Sub 4 is the most recognizable barrier in distance running, likely in all of track and field. So all the haters can suck it, at least I'll be able to look at NCAA races and not have to add 15 seconds to the 1500 times to see how everyone did.
RIP: D3 All-American Frank Csorba - who ran 13:56 in March - dead
