CBA XC coach Tom Heath retires
Who?
WHAT!!! He's one of the most successful hs xc coaches in the country. It had to be coming soon b/c of age but I'm still shocked. Well, cba will probably go win the nj moc again next year anyway...
Finally! Heath gets replaced by the best distance coach in the state! If you thought CBA was dominant already, just wait to McCafferty takes over!
Great Coach and it was an honour to have him coach here in NJ.
I believe there is a FloTrack feature about him that will be available on the 23rd of December.
Sean McCafferty is clearly the answer there and any team would be lucky to have him. Took Holmdel a Group II with small numbers to very solid performances and second at MOC one year.
Trust me, he knows what he is doing.
Would definitely be willing to pay the $20 required in order to grow the sport and watch that.....

Legendary coach Tom Heath, the most successful cross-country coach in New Jersey history and arguably the best high school cross-country coach in U.S. history, said on Monday afternoon that he has retired from coaching at Christian Brothers Academy.
Ever hear of Joe Newton?
And then McCafferty jumped ship in the middle of the summer for a chance to coach at CBA. Left the Holmdel program in shambles. It's a lot more fun to recruit talent versus working with what you are handed.
Talent is thinning at CBA. If he gets the job, he will most likely look like a failure compared to Heath.
Note: McCafferty never graduated from CBA. He was there but transferred to a lowly public school at some point.
Anyone will look like a failure compared to Heath. That is just the nature of these things so if McCafferty wants it, let him be the rebound coach.

Seems like a really mean spirited thing to post on a public forum. I know none of these guys, but I had heard about Heath through a teammate back in college.
Just seems really mean and unnecessary.
You should be proud of yourself for hiding behind a message board to make comments about a man you clearly barely know. Extremely unnecessary.
PEDS?
Cafferty will loose the team. He did not really go there and his quotes in the article above are misleading about his role.
HS XC is more about motivation of young runners more than secret training plans. While they do drew from a wider area, recruiting does not happen. Most runners enter CBA with dreams of playing other sports until Heath convinces/sells the dream of XC.
Caf may be a good guy but i don't believe he is the guy to sell the history of the old blue Jerseys. L. Bennet lived and breathed that history as a runner and coach so I think he would be a better fit.

Who is L. Bennet?
Oh, you mean, Chris Bennett? There's no L. If you knew anything about the program, you'd know Heath referred to Chris as "O" Bennett for a while when his brother Brian was in school ("Y" Bennett)
And Chris works for Nike. In Portland. He's not coming back.
Sean Mac is a great coach, and a great guy. He "didn't really go there?" Not sure what you mean - he went there for two years, then transferred to his local public school, Central Regional HS in Ocean County - he was commuting nearly 90 minutes each way his first two years of high school. That's just not really worth it. He's as CBA as any other guy who wore the Jersey. He ran more big meets in two years than most other guys did in their 4.
So long story short, piss off.
It's fair to give McDecaf a shot. He has yet to be in full control at CBA and did have some success at a much smaller school (2nd at MOC with group 2 Holmdel). Most people "in the know" would agree Bennett is the ideal choice, but I believe he has moved on to greener pastures in Portland. Giving that, I'm not sure who else is available to replace Heath. Especially considering CBA will likely prefer to pass the position to an Alumnus or at least in Decaf's case, someone who attended the school. The only other Alumni I can think of who have the qualifications (some prior coaching experience) to replace Heath would be the NYU coach and Pete Casagrande. Not positive about the NYU coach but I think he attended CBA.
P.S. All the recruiting rumors are true. It is well known that Kerwin got a 97 civic as a bonus after he won All Groups.
Informative post. Too bad you ruined it with some BS at the end.
