Since the "right thing" was paying what they advertised, it is strange that you suggest the opposite conclusion.
The right thing is to keep the money, as it was advertised and awarded.
You mean like when Wesly korir got 4th in the marathon when he started with the masses and everyone here howled and complained that the RD should "do the right" thing and give him some prize money when he wasn't entitled to it.
