How does a kid go from struggling to break 4 in a pro race as a HS Senior to a guy who can run 28:30 easy with a 53 point last lap?

YOU New Jersey haters can go to HELL.
It's very good that he is far from Iten and it's rogue doctors.

1. Ches ran 8:39 indoors in highschool to break a 49 year record.. He was very fast
2. He was a sub 14 5k runner (indoors)
3. He went to amazing coaches and an amazing facility at Oregon
I'm not saying that it's not amazing improvement, but it's not like Ches was just another elite high school runner.

I don't understand the problem. Isn't 4:00 significantly better than 28:30?

Daniels has 4 minute mile= to 28:44 10k
Right but many sub 28 guys are right around 4 for the mile. I know a guy who went 3:59 sub 27:50 and another who probably has a pr of 4:05 at best and ran 28:20s. So you don't have to be a great miler to run a good 10k.

New Jersey produces the best runners and track stars.
Whatever else your opinion is of Galen Rupp, all rational observers agree that his progression from HS to college was very good, if not exemplary, with access to all the facilities that Ches has and maybe more (Nike).
In high school, Ches' 5000 best was 20 seconds slower than Rupp. By the end of his JR. YEAR, it is a given that his 5000 time will be well over 20 seconds (possibly 30)faster than Rupp ON GRADUATION. This is the most dramatic progression for a collegiate distance runner in history.

Are you serious? Do you not understand how bad his high school coaching was? Saint Benedicts has some of the worst coaching in the state for distance.

Daniels tables might not be accurate for a runner like Cheserek

This is the answer. St. Benedicts coaching is absolutely abysmal. They just have some connection with Kenya to bring in the occasional stud. Ches happened to be supremely talented. I raced against Ches many times in high school, and knew that he was going to be ridiculously good in college. I didn't expect him to be this dominant, but looking at it all in perspective now I can definitely see how it happened.
Didn't he come from Kenya with some ridiculous PRs, like 14-low for 5K at altitude age 15? I remember being puzzled that he didn't crush every race in his senior year (he did in some).

The human body makes significant changes all the way until 25 years old. Conceivably, a high school phenom could improve significantly every year from 15-25 just based on structural growth and strength improvements

Well done. You got a lot of bites.
Ches was an overweight, unrestrained low mileage kid in U.S. His training situation was barely equal to a H.S. all-American. Also, his senior year was pretty much the same as his junior year because on an early season injury and focusing on academics instead of running fast times.

Conceivably does not mean actually. You don't get stronger or faster from doing nothing and structural growth.
grampa ches now has way better access to the NOPe dope, Centro Sauce and Oregon Juice. Plus there is no homework at eugene clown kollege.
