After a few years coaching at the hs level, I'm surprised at the lack of variety and professionalism in this job. I meet USATF-certified coaches all the time who present themselves as if they walk out of the nearest dialysis clinic. They know next to nothing about running and they don't promise much as good quality people. I'm trying not to sound superior here, but I often struggle to the tell the difference between a xc/track coach and your garden variety meathead football coach.
Who do you have at the opposite end of the spectrum? Those coaches doing creative, innovative things with their training and getting results. Coaches who can articulate themselves very well, who know their running science and running history, who see themselves as eternal students of the sport, who understand the adolescent and young adult psyche, who can keep parents in their place, who have all the soft skills you need to work with, well, people?
Steve Magness is the only person who comes to mind but I am sure there are probably many more.
