Warning - really not trying to be arrogant here, just trying to understand the science behind this:
I have taken up cycling after running in college and in the past 8 months have gone from barely holding 17mph on a ride to rolling with local Cat 1's in workouts; I logged a solo 22mph average 100 mile ride on a road bike and I have even beaten some semi-pros in a time trial series near me. It seems I clearly have more natural talent as a cyclist than a runner (mid-pack fodder in college: 4:29 Mile, 8:47 3K, 15:17 5K, 32:21 10K XC) and was wondering what the physiological reasons for this could be. Footspeed was always my weak point and endurance was my strong point in running - I easily could hold 5:45 mile pace in 18 mile long runs but couldn't run a 28 second 200 if there was a gun to my head. FWIW, I always was a bit "thicker" than my running teammates - maybe the extra leg muscle helps push a hard gear? Are there any other physiological reasons why someone would be a better cyclist than a runner?
