Only advice is run a downhill course with a very steep grade.
God what a dum bass.
Worse than Rossi.
He's got a one mile Turkey Trot tomorrow. I say he goes 7:22 and quits.
The difference between this guy and the current US outdoor record holder (Jim Sorensen at 4:04.98), is that this guy really wants it. He wants it so badly that he even blogged about it. I'll bet Sorensen never even blogged about it, not even once.
"I’m 41, and while I doubt I would be the oldest man to ever run a sub-4 minute mile, time is not on my side"
Not the oldest man, but the oldest american. The 40-44 AG record for the mile was set by Bill Stewart on 1/22/1983 at 4:11.00. Lagat lowered it to 3:54.91 on 2/14/15 at age 40.
Eamonn Coghlan ran 3:58.15 indoor at 41.
Go Paul! You can do it!
It's times like these where I'm feeling unmotivated ahead of tomorrow's turkey trots, and this man's motivation helped me to find the determination I was looking for. Thanks for posting this.

I dunno. He seems sane reading his blog.
Just a guy who knows at some intellectual level that running 4 minutes, or even 5, is very unlikely for him, but hasn't run enough to really understand what those paces mean, how fast you can go, improvement curves, etc.
"what a dum bass"
-Sweet, sweet irony strikes again.
No, he's a complete idiot. He has arbitrarily decided to train to run a 4 minute mile despite the fact that he admittedly hates running.
Why not try to excel at something you actually enjoy doing?

He was just avoiding the censor.

Side ramifications of getting fit?
Sometimes the ends justify the means?
Thinks he might start enjoying running?
Things he really enjoys doing aren't as good for him in the long run?
Looking for a new hobby?
I had that dream once. Until I realized 32 minute 10k runners at that age, my age, were doing 4:30 when they raced the mile.
Good luck to this runner. Good dream, but sub-5:00 is way more realistic and still commendable at 41.
He should talk to a former Olympian like, Greg Price, Of Troy Alabama and Troy University's IT department. He made the 96 team an alternate and was a pacing partner to great Bob Kennedy. Price is masters age now so he should have lots of helpful insights. He is an "endurance" runner now and I think he mentioned he hold some records.

I have no doubt this guy can get within 4 minutes of the 4 minute mile if he really puts his mind to it.
As for the Price guy, I have never seen a runner that looked like that and ran 20 miles a day. Does he wear that fanny pack for his 20 miles or just save it for races he apparently either doesn't finish or that pic is from over 12 years ago.
Honestly, I expected to hate this so much.
But so far it's amusing to see how people who know nothing about running try to approach running when the end goal is running fast (vs. a finishers medal).
This is unbelievably stupid. The fact that this is impossible--not "impossible" in the inspiring, Disney movie sense of word, but categorically impossible--is so obvious it doesn't need to be discussed.
Most of the time, these human interest interest stories don't really bother me. Want to treat running as an "experiential" activity? Sure, whatever. Training for that first marathon? Fine. But this entire enterprise is infuriating: the fact that this man has set such a goal; the fact that he blogs about it on a men's website; the silly, stupid attempts at humor; his idiotic sense that his blog somehow makes him an interesting person, rather than a delusional, self-obsessed, suburban jackass...
Blogs like his detract from the real accomplishments of serious running, and as such, is the opposite of what this website stands for.
I don't know, I kinda like it. When this guy tries and fails MISERABLY, we, the real runners, look more awesome.
God, look at this trash. wrote:

-bro, I'm being totally serious when I say that you've got some deep seated issues. Why you're so angry at something so arbitrary that has no direct effect on your life is a harbinger to potential problems in the future. Get it figured out sooner than later.
