Who says it is selfish? Ignore them
Who says it is selfish? Ignore them
tldr: why is it considered selfish to put myself ahead of others?
It's a common misconception (especially in the South) that it's healthy to put others before yourself. Putting others before yourself is a value taught in our schools, churches, and around the dinner table. There are some situations in which it is indeed better to put others before you. However, it should not be a general rule of thumb.
It's pretty simple.
How can someone who puts others first, and never takes care of them self, be of any use to anyone else - including friends, family, strangers, employers, etc? It's a self-defeating ambition. To be a healthy individual, you must do things for yourself first, which will in turn allow you to serve others better.
So. When it comes to running... I don't sacrifice it for my family. Why? It keeps me physically and mentally healthy. It gives me the exercise for my body and the time to ponder how I'm going to manage my life. Without time to do those things. I'd be a miserable person that my family despises to be around. And I would probably hate myself, too.
So, before you put others before you, make sure you've done the things necessary to take care of yourself first. Everyone else will appreciate it. If they think it's selfish, that is their 'stuff', not yours. They are the ones who aren't making healthy choices. Not you.
Just be careful what you justify as 'taking care of yourself' vs. true selfishness. Aka, spending all of your money on running shoes when your kids need school supplies. As with many life issues, there is a gray area. Just try to be honest with yourself, trust your gut, and you'll usually come out better on the other end.
You mean is it selfish to rely on the hard work of others to support you like you do Jamin? Yes it is.
OP, no one I know says this. This is an imaginary problem
jamin if you are wondering, you are selfish. thats why you drive drunk and you have no friends.
You can't run this week either, right? Next week will here soon enough...
Tell them it's like paying dividends vs. re-investing the profits in yourself. If you use your time for your own benefit you will create a situation where you could have even MORE time and money to give to others at some future date to be determined. So really your net present value of altruism is just as high if not higher than someone volunteering at the soup kitchen today.
Anything can be argued as being selfish. It is/becoming a meaningless word. Generally the people who say that are angry you have what they don't. Be it time or money or whatever. People never apply that argument to themselves. They always want everyone else to stop being selfish. It's so stupid.

How's it going, TAA?

It's good. Just got off work. Didn't have classes today so worked a longer day. Really enjoying my new job so far. How are you?
My mom says that I'm slefish because when I'm not at my part time minimum wage job, I'm spending time in the basement smelling my own farts.

Cool. What's the new job again? Are you doing anything fun for Thanksgiving break? I am good, happy for a couple days off though.

I'm an accountant assistant and will eventually become an auditor. Today was only my 3rd day so I haven't done much yet, but my boss and co-workers seem pretty cool. I don't really do much for Thanksgiving. I just like to go home (my parents house) and relax. My Mom is traditional and likes to make a huge dinner. I'll spend a few hours on Saturday watching the OSU v. Michigan game lol.

Of course, pretty typical stuff. I will probably watch that game too. I don't follow football that closely but pretty much all the best games seem to be condensed into this weekend so might as well.

I couldn't care less about Football. But it's pretty much required for me to watch it. About to head down to my parent's house. Waiting for traffic to dive down a bit. Do you do anything for Thanksgiving?

Negative returns on investments are a b*tch.

Well of course, you go to OSU, you have to. Not sure if it's based on my browsing history but when I google it's not football anymore the first result is LetsRun. Not doing anything major, I'm running two Turkey trots (one last Sunday one tomorrow), a couple dinners at friends', maybe go for a hike or study some programming or something.

That's cool. I should find a TT to do. How did you do in the one on Sunday? I hope you have a good Thanksgiving!
(sorry for the late reply. Took a nap)
