First off, my daughter has been running races since the Fredericksburg Great Train Race 3 years ago when she was 6. She got a trophy and LOVED it so, she asked if she could do more. She ran a bunch of 1-milers and when she was 7 she ran her first 5k. Without training, she ran a 27:03 and it was good enough to take first place in her category.
She continued running 1-milers and 5ks (with one 8k trail in there) pretty regularly with one or the other every other weekend until she found some red pumps at DSW. She asked me to buy them and, of course, I said "no way." She asked if she ran a 10k, could she have them? I said "If you can run it without whining or stopping, sure," thinking there was no way she could do that without training. We signed up for the Ashburn Village Fiesta 10k in Ashburn, VA and race day came. She started the race by going half a mile, tripping on her shoelace and eating it, face first onto the pavement. She got up crying with bloody palms and knees but continued running without saying a word. She ran 1:08:17, which isn't too impressive but she ran the whole way so, she now has red pumps.
Anyway, 2 weekends ago she ran the Richmond Anthem Half Marathon at 8 years old. She prepared for that by running 2 weekends of 1-milers plus 5ks on both Saturdays and Sundays, usually walking away with a trophy and sometimes 2. She ran the half in 2:27:14 and was one of only 6 kids under 10 to run it. She then went on to play in her team's last soccer game of the season at center forward and scored a goal in a 3 to 2 win.
Last week, after having run the half marathon, her school had their Turkey Trot 1-miler and she turned in her fastest mile ever at 6:51 and we then ran, the next Saturday, in the MCM Turkey Trot 10k on Quantico with a 1:00:41, blasting her previous best 10k time by over 5 minutes.
This week, we have the Turkey Trot races in downtown Fredericksburg where she'll run the 1-miler and the 5k and we have plans to run many more races over the winter in preparation for running her second half at the Rock and Roll in DC (where she ran her first 5k).
I know it sounds like I'm bragging and, I am but I'm a really proud dad. She surprises me every time she runs with her mental and physical toughness at such a young age. I don't push her or force her into anything. She does all of this because she loves the hardware.
Finally, to the question. We're memebers of Team RWB in Frederickburg and at the MCM 10k this past weekend a team member told me he's been following her running on my FB account and that I should worry about damaging her growth plates with the amount of distance runs she does. Should we slow down? is this an actual problem with kid runners?? I've heard of such things with kids that try lifting weights but running???? Aren't we built for that?
