Lots and lots of people seem to recommend (and do) longer tempo runs (i.e. 30min plus) when training 5k.
What are the benefits of this?
Surely, through the laws of specificity, if you are training for an even that lasts less than 20 min a 20 min tempo should be optimal (as anything less you dont reap full benefit a la Jack Daniels).
Now I am not saying 20 mins at 5:30 pace is better than 30 mins at 5:30 pace but surely for a 5k, 20 mins at 5:30 pace is better than 30 mins at 5:45 or something slower?
Discuss.
