where do you think you get the energy to turn that protein into muscle? Why do you think it happens when you're asleep? It's a highly endothermic process.
Once your body fat gets near essential levels, your body will burn anything BUT fat to protect its vital functions. Bone and muscle are expendable in that circumstance and they waste away. Drugs may slow that down, but the energy has to come from somewhere - if you go back to burning fat it can kill you.
Any high school or college athlete as skinny as the leanest elite pros would be benched by a responsible coach. It's not healthy, and how they have enough energy to stay compeititive is a mystery.
