Obviously fitness is a huge component to being a successful XC runner. But racing tactics and strategy also play an important role. What percentages would you assign to each for successful racing?

99% fitness
1% tactics
It's probably 80% fitness and then 20% not going out too fast.
Examples of the 20%: At a district meet, had our #1 runner go out intentionally fast and the top five of the rival school went with him. The rival team then started dying and we went 1,2,4,5,7. It might have been competitive and could have gone 2,4,5,7,10 for them but adrenaline kicked in and they fell for it. First time we beat them that year (planned that way) and we went on to our regional and State.
And, two fit runners and who has the better kick? It's harder to beat someone you can't drop. Who leads? Who follows?
If you are not fit though, tactics and strategy go to 0%.
circular reference. the closeness in fitness exponentially increases importance of tactics. put another way- if i race myself, clearly we are evenly matched on fitness and 100% of the result comes down to tactics.
looking at yesterday's men's race, the only way someone was going to beat cheserek was if he had a bad day, was sick, injured etc. thats not tactics, thats just luck
I think on average it's something like 95-5.
