i remember having a hard time understanding why leo manzano wasn't sponsored, even after OLYMPIC success....
lewis kent runs a "WR beer mile" and bam, there you go.
i don't know the specifics of his contract; but what does this say about running?

Why doesn't Manzano go break the beer mile record? It should be easy for a 3:5x miler to run 4:40s for a beer mile right?
I'd rather sponsor a fun-loving beer miler shaking it up at the grass roots level than many ex-Nike athletes with arguable baggage. Consider this, too. Kent gets to run in a full Brooks uniform most of the times he'll race. If a guy like Manzano sees any success he'll just end up in a Nike uniform anyway.
manzano saw a ton of success and ended up in no uniform... until now, when i'm not sure he'll see as much success as he's seen.
i get your point... but i suppose i'm looking at this from an "outside in" viewpoint, rather than with the "inside out" skepticism (ala Nike and "the game" being rigged).
brooks believes they will sell more shoes putting their cash behind a niche "beer miler" than a straight-forward running talent. there are SO many talented runners out there... and it's the beer mile guy who gets the contract.
if you're out there training your ass off trying to be something, trying to make ends meat... this has to be a bit discouraging, no?
Marketing isn't about promoting the quality of your product. It is about placing your product in a place that people will remember.
Kinda reminds me of The Golf Channel's Big Break. Thousands of golfers out there grinding away to make The Tour, and one of these 12 schmos will get a Sponsor's Exemption for winning on a reality TV show? Well, the TV show gets more folks interested in golf, so, maybe a win win.
Maybe the Beer Mile will get folks interested in running, lol
What if he had gotten a Budweiser sponsorship instead of a Brooks sponsorship? Imagine the drunks sitting around like, "I drink myself into oblivion every Thursday night, and this guys drinks FOUR BEERS and gets sponsored, just like that?"
:-)
Lewis Kent showed up to a local 5k here over the summer. I think he ran 16something in a Canada singlet. Cool guy to talk to after the race. Also now I can say I beat a WR holder in his prime... but not at his event.
