I don't think it will ever happen.
But no, they wouldn't count as a team. They'd be running as individuals. There are 31 teams period.

what if not only that but they all run out of their minds to if you score them as a 5 man team they win, yet they are not actually representing a team at nationals and just happen to all run for the same team. Do they deserve the trophy?
If that happens the NCAA will cease to exist .. haha
What would make it even better is if they only ran 5 at regionals, so they don't leave anyone.... so the team makes it... but the team doesn't make it?

If your top 5 goes 15, 16, 17, 18, 20 (1st at large guy takes 19th) and the two teams that finish 1-2 make up the top 14, and you don't get an at large bid as a team, then you are either very slow and should not be running D1 or there are less than 5 teams in your region.

I was thinking something along these lines. In what situation would a team good enough to have 5 individual qualifiers not just qualify as a team? The odds of this ever happening are almost nothing.
If you get no wins during your entire season then you wont get an at large bid

How could 5 guys from the same team not count as a team in XC?

Those five are in the individual portion of the race and the team they are from is not an official entry in the team race just as rojo posted.
Is it mathematically possible for that scenario to happen?

Yes it is mathematically possible but really very unlikely. There are a lot of possible NCAA scenarios which could theoretically happen but most likely never will
the only problem would be how hard would it be for the 5th guy to get the At large. he would have to of racked up some wins i assume to get an AT-Large

OK, that makes sense from an official standpoint. If those 5 scored what would have put them on the podium, though, I have to think everybody would recognize it.
The computer program for scoring the race would not recognize them as a team and would not post a cumulative score for them
Who remembers when they figured out the team score at The Terminal Bar at VCP?

That is about the funniest yet unlikliest scenario I have ever heard of. It's funny because it's totally possible on paper but would not happen in a million years in reality.
FWIW, one year in my region two of the teams were very highly ranked, and both placed all five guys ahead of most teams' number 1 runner. The at large bids went to guys who finished pretty far back relative to most years.
Here is the best I could come up with as a hypothetical to get 5 guys considered for At-large at a region that sends only 2 teams to NCAAs:
Team 1 - 39 points
Team 2 - 40 points
Team 3 - 41 points
Team 1: 1,3,10,12,13
Team 2: 2,4,5,14,15
Team 3: 6,7,8,9,11
There doesn't seem to be a way you could place 5 guys in the top-10 and still have two teams in front of you through 5 runners, BUT you can very easily place 4 in the top-10 and not make it as a team. This scenario would give you 4 automatic individuals, and to give your 5th guy a shot, they would need to finish 11th or better individually.
Will never happen, but it was fun to think about. Imagine if this was how it played out at the Mid-Atlantic region and Tiernan was that #5 runner for Nova and finished 11th. He would likely get an at-large because of his regular season.
I posted this on the other thread regarding villanova's 3 individual qualifiers...something similar happened at the PA state meet a couple of years ago. PIAA dictates number of teams and individuals that can qualify. And in this case they treated the 5 individual qualifiers as a team:
...in PA teams qualify for the PIAA State meet via Districts. District 12 consists primarily of the public and parochial schools in Philadelphia (Phila Public and Catholic Leagues). Depending on division (based upon enrollment) - the number of teams/individuals that qualify are dictated by the PIAA. In 2012 District 12 AAA (largest schools) had 1 team and 5 individual qualifying slots. Cardinal O'Hara won (they would go on to lose the AAA State meet on a tie-breaker) but LaSalle qualified their top 5 guys via the individual slots (first 5 non-O'Hara finishers).
At States LaSalle would go on to finish 5th as a team without actually qualifying a team for the meet.
This is virtually impossible to occur under current NCAA selection process but if it did happen, why wouldn't the NCAA treat the 5 individual qualifiers as a team?
I am not sure what basis people have for saying they would not count as a team, they WOULD receive a team score.
SECTION 6. Scoring
ARTICLE 3.
b. The score shall be determined by totaling the points (place finish) of the first
five runners of each team to finish. The team scoring the lower number of
points shall be the winner.
This is the only rule that comes remotely close to addressing the issue, so if a team has 5 runners at Nationals, yes they receive a team score.
Our state was similar once upon a time. It was top 4 teams and 5 indiv not on those 4 teams. My ladies had 4 of the 5 (and the first non qualifier). The four teams in our region all placed top 5 in State. we were around 7th best team in state.
Our state is top 30 and top 4 teams goes on to Sectionals before State. We had a team put 5 in the 20-30 range but placed 5th as a team. They received a score at the Sectional Meet with their 5 runners.
