After running 22:23 this weekend at Big East champs, which is faster than Lawi Lalang and Stephen Sambu at Louisville in 2012, the question of whether or not Tiernan is the fastest runner in the NCAA right now. This is the second season in a row that he's had the fastest time of the year (23:00 last year at Washington Invite), and he came up short at NCAAs last year, finishing 18th.
I would argue that if NCAAs were a time trial, Tiernan would win, and that he's the fastest runner on the grass this year. I don't think, however, that he's the BEST runner out there. On paper, it looks like he should win. When it really comes down to it against big competition, he doesn't.
So, the statement: Tiernan is the NCAA's fastest distance runner right now, but is not the best because the other guys (Ches, Rotich, Justin Knight) are simply better racers.
Thoughts?
