Why do non-runners constantly disrespect running??

Talk is cheap. Anybody can say they could or will, but you are the one who DID IT. Politely tell them where to find the coach or give them his email address. They will never call or email him.

The reality of running is that the difference between each level of running is a huge chasm, each requiring years of training. Guy who runs 4:40 in HS thinks he coulda been all american, but does not try. Next up is "also ran" on college team and is usually capable of 2 miles or more at 4:40. Top college guy who is all conference can run a 10k at 4:40 or faster, World class runner does a marathon that fast. Each is a big step up.

Your big talker probably didn't even run 4:40 in HS, so he has no chance.

It's even worse if you are a sprinter, suddenly everyone you speak to ran a sub 11 sec time at their school sports day.

I remember one guy who joined my university's club bragging how he ran sub 23 sec for the 200m when he was 16 but then "drink" got in the way, cut to the first event he runs after joining and he stinks up the joint with a 27 sec 200m.

The way to impress non-runners is to score three touchdowns in a high school football game.

Absolutely. And they did it in flats with a standing start. Actually, those guys are easier to call out because it's pretty easy to talk someone into running a 100m informal race instead of a mile or two mile trial during practice. And then if they run in the mid 12s they'll think it's no effort at all to cut 2 seconds off that. **SNORT** Of course it's not surprising if they go down with a hammy pull.

SO TRUE. My roommate this year said that he "raced a girl sprinter at his high school who had broken 11 in the 100m and he beat her. So he thinks he broke 10" Unless he beat candace hill I don't believe him for a second. The guy smokes bowl, drank like a drain and couldn't walk up two flights of stairs at once.

The right answer is, "Let's go running!!!!"

Nothing shuts down the B.S. squad better than the threat of doing.

The key is you are a running party. Get one of them out, destroy them, and word will get around.

Americans equate running with plodding through a 5:30 marathon. If you can run a 5K in 30 you start thinking about running a marathon. 98% of people have no comprehension of what it takes to run a 31 minute 10K

This is a true human phenomena for almost any activity, sport or job. It's because most people aren't that bright, are lazy and they aren't able to see themselves clearly. People underestimate the difficulty of most things and assume they could do them to if they wanted to, all they'd have to do is "put a bit of effort into it". It's a self defense mechanism for lazy and stupid - thinking they are merely underachievers - pretending if they cared enough they could do it. The alternative is admitting that they aren't good enough, even if they tried. It's also getting worse as we reward every child with a trophy/medal for everyone, don't fail anyone etc. It's become a crime to tell a kid the sun doesn't shine out of his/her ass for every thing they do.

If this bothers you there is a problem. Every runner has this problem/issue, don't let it bother you and just tell them any time they want to race any distance you are ready and then destroy the kid and show the hobby jogger what a real runner is.

I run on a division 1 team. We aren't national caliber or top of the nation or anything, but we still have a lot of really fast guy and gals just like almost any other college team. However, whenever it comes up that I'm on the XC team in conversation with anyone (not just girls or guys) they always respond like it's "cute." Then more than half of them say something along the lines of "Oh I've been running a lot and thinking about joining the team too!" I SLAVED for 4 years to earn a spot on this team that isn't even that good comparitively in college. It might be the fact that you're so defensive about your little play hobby, coupled with how clearly you're seeking approval and validation from others. That is pretty cute.

You'll likely come to realize this in 10 years when you're working (or "slaving", if you prefer) at a boring no-accolades grownup job.

I don't really run but I once ran a 24 sec 200 in high school and I could have gone faster. They wanted me to run track but I am a lifter. what is your mile time? I think I run a 4-minute mile with a couple of months to train for it

That wasn't what he said at all. Nice projection of your insecurities. I guess you are slow and sensitive about it. If you enjoy running, just enjoy it, don't worry that you suck and that people who can run fast, or know something about running, know you suck. The important thing is that you try really really hard - harder even - cause you suck. Good for you buddy. That's special. Gold sticker.

Uh... you just don't get it, do you? What I wrote is the mirror image of what the other poster wrote. Those who say "I can run faster only if I cared enough to do it" have the same mentality as those who think "those hobby joggers could run faster only if they cared enough." Neither is willing to admit some people are simply slower whether they "care enough" or not.
