I can't deny that the fastest times are faster. But, I'm not so sure about depth on the boys side.
I have been going to meets in Minnesota for the past 3 years following my daughters, so I can only speak anecdotally. But, overall I'm not impressed.
My best time in the early 80s was 15:50 for 5K although most of my races were at 3 miles. I finished 5th at conference as my team's #2 runner. We had 3 runners with PRs below 16 and 5 under 16:30 (all under 16 for 3 miles). We finished 2nd in our conference and fourth (I think) at sectionals and did not qualify to run as a team at our state meet, nor did I qualify individually.
If we had run in the south suburban conference in Minnesota this past week which was won in 16:34 and 10th at 17:13, my 1980s team, even with an uneven performance or two, would almost certainly have had 5 runners in the top 10 and possibly swept the top 3 positions. Those aren't times from an unusually difficult course. On a pancake flat and fast invitational the same boys ran nearly identical times.
Now, when we get to the Minnesota state meet there will no doubt be some wonderful runners in the top 20, But, I have my questions about the depth.
