Always assumed it was popular because it was cheap.

Well it's absolutely not cheap. But it usually ends up being cheaper than personal training sessions if you're going once a week and it costs your more than $50 for an hour, especially since wherever your training sessions are you probably ALSO have a monthly membership. It's not like you're paying that much just to use their space on your own.
But yeah, the hype around CrossFit is stupid.
Why they need to develop a cult-like following...who else would be that stupid to pay so much?
Group Exercise Classes have always had a huge turn out. Check out the Zumba or Step classes.
Crossfit is the alpha male of group exercises classes. Group classes in general can be very cult-like. So it's no surprise that people who meet for physical activity with the same instructor with the same people develop a cult-like atmosphere.

Huh?? Not sure what you're trying to say here Alan, but as far as the thread topic - I hadn't a clue that Crossfit was nearly this expensive. Never really thought about it before, but if someone had asked me, I probably would have guessed about $50/month. So for one month of Crossfit, I get 2 1/2 years at Planet Fitness???
Crossfit has always been this way. You are basically buying personal training sessions. It's not a normal gym. They do typically have open gym time but it usually costs more. For that price you basically get to come to however many group sessions as you want.

Ok for the last time, you jealous losers. Get over it! There are a lot of people who have money, and want to workout amongst like minded people, and don't enjoy distance running. Why the F do you care??? These people you blast for wasting money are either very passionate about their chosen exercise and cut corners in other areas to pay for it, or they're successful financially and don't give a shit about dropping a little money on something they enjoy. Keep in mind, $250 a month is literally pocket change to a helluva lot of people. Don't be a jealous loser. I'm not sure why so many distance runners spend so much time worrying about CF. They don't give you a second thought. The only crossfitters here are distance runners who like to laugh at the rest of you nerds as they troll.

Except you are not getting personal training, you're getting a group fitness class emphasizing exertion and speed over form.
We don't "spend so much time worrying about CF" o.w. we might have had a clue as to how utterly expensive it was. And we're not "blasting" anybody, just making an observation on the cost is all. And we're certainly not "jealous", if anything, we're glad not to be involved with such an overpriced endeavor!
Yuppie scum!!
Or you could take that $3k you were going to spend on crossfit this year and buy your own: barbell w/ bumper plates, pull-up bar, row machine, kettle bells, bands, boxes, chalk, use a daily WOD app, and have plenty of cash left over.
I think one is better off not focusing on how other people choose to spend their money.
Or how other people choose to exercise.
Some insecurity on the latter, I'd guess.
Maybe deep down. You could invest in some therapy to explore it, with all the money you're holding onto.
I think you're missing the point.
Where did you get $250 per month? Most places you can get 3 classes per week for about $120 per month.

You can tell me what the point is then.
That's a lot of money just to pick things up and put them down again.

I was paying $150/month when I did it (stopped about 3 years ago so higher now I guess).
FWIW, my observations:
The people were actually very nice overall
Going that hard every workout took its toll after while
I did like feeling stronger
Those kipping pullups can't be good for you
