Ok, I've read several stories now of guys in their 40's-50's who are portrayed as totally unathletic couch potatoes that go on to become ultramarathoners or Ironman triathletes. I'm currently enjoying "My year of running dangerously."
But, always, part way into the story we learn that no, the guy isn't really the unathletic couch potato. We learn that he was a competitive swimmer, or ran track in college, or...well, you get the idea.
I'm looking for a real case where someone who was not athletic in high school or college, and wasn't in competitive sports, goes on to be an ultra marathoner. I don't care if they're seriously competitive, just running those distances.
Whaddya think? Is there one out there?
