Don't understand your question. It is legal to carry pepper spray in MA if you are over 18. If the dog is attacking you, you have the right to protect yourself. You can't pursue the dog if you scared him off.
you can kill it by any means necessary if he's attacking you.
'round here we kill 'em with a kick to the head.
Until you stop the attack. It's a dog, not a person.
But contrary to what the Internet tough guys will have you believe, killing a dog of any consequential size that is actually attacking you is close to impossible with your bare hands. Better off trying to back them off and get out of their territory. Be assertive not aggressive. 95% of the time they are just bluffing and you don't want to make it worse.
Why would you get arrested for defending yourself?
You can't attack the dog. Other than that you should be ok.
Can you give an example of what you're thinking?

Why would you post this? The thread has potential to feature more of those epic stories of runners breaking dogs' necks and then fighting the owner. I love reading those stories.
I got attacked by a motherluvin husky a few years back and the owner took off while I called for ambulance.
next time I will snap a neck or at least kick out a few teeth and an eyeball
Remember to use only the first half of the pepper spray on the dog, the bottom half is for the owner.
As I have written on here before, I was attacked by 4 or 5 farm collies about 30 years ago. During the attack I was scared, the pack thing and my own blood just hit some sort of survival instinct. When I was telling the cop about the battle, he wondered why I didn't look worse? I told him about using a branch to get back into the battle, then he wondered why the dogs didn't look worse?
Near as I can figure, "killing a dog of any consequential size that is actually attacking you is close to impossible with your bare hands" or even with a swung weapon without luck or some kind of training is right. It is still a dog and mostly domesticated, it is not a wolf that kills every few days. If the battle starts going against the dog, it will go from fight to flight in a heart beat.
After asserting myself to the owner...get the dog under control...away from me etc...
Can I use a kick to keep it off me?? To protect myself only....
Without getting arrested...

If the dog is attacking you, then yes of course you can kick it. Kick the living sh!t out of it. Dogs in public belong on a leash. Period. Sometimes dogs escape the yard (mine has done that a couple times), but if that's the case, the owner is still liable, and if the dog is trying to bite you, you do everything you can to make it not do that. If you end up on the ground with a dog that is continuing to bite you, then grab a leg and break it.
Have you considered incorporating The Mighty Bench Press into your workout routine? The Mighty Bench Press has great power and the aggressive dogs may feel intimidated by your new physically imposing presence.
I always carry two pepper sprays with me in case one is not enough (I running through woods where seldom is other people except for some with unleashed dogs). I have used it a couple of times, usually once every few months. Usually the attack is over just when the dog sniffs the spray from couple of yards but there have been cases when I empty almost whole of the container before the dog gets the right dose. Whats even worse I feel bad for the stupid animal afterwards.
Was on a run about 5-6 years ago on a country road when a husky type dog (probably some kind of a mix though) just came bolting off its porch straight for me. Didn't have sticks or rocks nearby I could grab so I just squared up and waited to see what it would do. Once it got close it actually jumped up toward my face. Somehow, probably from the adrenaline, I was able to punch it pretty hard in the mouth while it was coming toward me. In the the process of hitting it I slipped on the loose gravel/berm and fell. I thought for sure the dog would be on top of me in an instant so I jumped up as quick as I could, only to see the thing running tail between its legs back up to its house. I looked and I hit the thing so hard in the mouth my hand was bleeding from it. The owners asked if I was alright, I asked if it had all its shots. They said it did so I went on my way.
Just shoot the dog AND the owner. Prob solved.
your welcome

Sure, I think you would be justified in this case. However, if you have time to utter those sentences to the owner, you're not being attacked. Dog attacks are very fast. That said, even if the dog is just jumping on you and licking you, I think you have the right to exert some force.
I am a dog lover, and a beloved black lab resides in my home. She has never hurt more than a fly, however, I would NEVER let her off leash outside my fenced yard. Outside a home or or a fenced in yard, dogs belong on a leash. The nicest dog can be unpredictable.
I dog once attacked me when I was out for a run. It bit me on the ass and in the ensuing scuffle I kicked it so hard in the ribs it died later that day. The neighbor who owned it had been warned about letting it off leash many times. I feel zero remorse for killing that dog.
I had a dog running towards me that I knew I couldn't out run. In an attempt to confuse it, I sprinted towards it yelling. The dog stopped and looked confused at my unexpected behavior. I then ran off as fast as I could in the other direction and never looked back.
I run in unwashed running clothes and sweat alot. Dogs don't come near me and I've never been arrested. Maybe this is what you should do as well.
