In the summer I was doing 70 mpw in singles, 20-30 min tempos and fartleks at 5k effort with easy runs at 730 pace. I ran my best race of the summer in early July, a 17:09 5k. I burnt out shortly after because not having a rest day in 4 months finally got to me, and had some sub-par races as a result.
After that I took a week off and did 4 weeks of easy mileage to build my mileage back up (27-34-42-46 miles each week) with Sundays off. I've been doing my easy runs a little faster in the low/sub 7 range. I felt fit then had one of the worst races I've done in years today, an 11:49 2 mile open xc race. Yesterday I did 9 miles 656 pace.
So the question is, should I slow my easy runs down? Should I slow them back to the 730 pace they were at in the summer but rest on Sundays to avoid burning out and do more track work during the speed phase instead of fartleks? What do you think?
