I had enough talent to run DI in college and posted a PR of 30:30 in the 10k, my main event. I knew I was decent, but I recognized I was not a top tier guy.
My teammate in the same class as me ran 28:45. We trained together nearly every day. Obviously he was able to workout at a higher level at times, but we also did alit together. We were friends but the substantial differences in our performance level was a source of frustration for me.
Years after college he was reminiscing with me and talked about how he wished he had found a way to compete with Sam Chelenga, the NCAA stud of our time.
I learned that competitive people will always want to be faster. That is a good thing. While at times I wished O had more talent, I am also thankful for the talent I had that allowed me to do what I did in college.
Be happy that your talent and hard work has brought you to the varsity level at your school. On big high school teams many athletes never make the top seven. If you continue to work maybe you will have opportunities after high school.
Your teammate might continue to develop, or maybe not. Regardless, do what you can with the talent you have. Racing is all about testing ourselves against one another and all you can do is make the best with what you were born with.
