I'm a first year coach, straight out of college, working with a HS XC program that is largely undeveloped. I've studied distance training for close to 10 years and ran for a good program in college and never did I perform any 'stair laps' as training. Nor have I read about any good runners using them in their training . I always viewed them as conditioning others sports used as they aren't too specific to XC racing demands.
However, in previous years at this school they would regularly do stair laps in practice. They would do them on the 8 sets of stairs surrounding the HS basketball court and a concrete oval up above it. The kids seemed to really enjoy them, as I keep getting asked when we are going to be doing stair laps.
I want kids to enjoy their training, so I may implement them a few times. Does anyone have any thoughts? Reasons to perform or not perform them? Anecdotes of past runners utilizing this training?
