How many miles in season?

    This summer I gradually built up my mileage increasing steadily up to 60 by the first meet week. I have stayed at 60 ever since then and we have ran 4 races since. The first race I ran 16:39 which was a big PR for me, and I accredited the mileage increase for this PR (in the past I only hit about 50). The next races I ran 17:00, 16:51, and 16:51 again. I felt awesome in that first race and haven't felt as good ever since. It's frustrating I haven't been able to get back down to the time I ran the first race (It's not just that that course is much faster). Should I not be staying at 60 mpw anymore? Would that be affecting me and how I perform in races? Should I drop and if so, what mileage should I go to?

    Everyone wants their progress to be linear, but it is usually more of a staggered line.

    Your times are fairly close to your big PR. Sometimes the increased mileage can take its toll on the body when you add racing on top of it.

    My guess is that you've upped your overall intensity now that you are in season and your legs are bit stale on race day. I'd give your body some time to adjust and I'd bet you'll set another PR soon.

    Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep, eat well, and stay hydrated. Make sure your easy days are really easy -- that is probably single biggest mistake HS runners make, too fast on easy days leaves the leg without any pop for workouts and races.

    When you say take the easy days easy, what's an estimate of a pace for an easy day? I've heard this before but I've never really been sure how easy I should take it. Right now my training pace is anywhere from 6:40-7:10, and my easy days are like 7:15. Am I going too fast? If I go slower than that I feel like I'm not really getting a workout in and slacking.

    #1 thing HS kids won't (or they say "can't") do. I've seen 16 min 5k kids turn into JV kids running 19+ because of not sleeping.

    Go to bed early. Every night.

    You need to get past that. Easy runs are supposed to be easy. Try this -- the day before your next workout, run so slowly that you'd be embarrassed to be seen. See how your hard workout feels the next day.

    In short, your easy days should be easy enough that you can hit times in workouts without killing yourself. It's better to err on the side of a little too slow.
