Very tender spot at the bottom of tibia

This is my first year of running and I got shin splints in my left leg but my coach still had me excercise but just a little bit less. Then I got shin splints in my right leg and my coach didn't know about it and she thought my shins were healing so she had me doing more running and then after a while I noticed that the pain wasn't as bad the pain in the top of my tibia and it is extremely tender about an inch and a half above my ankle. It feels like a bruise on my bone or something but it isn't visable.

Please help and should I go to the doctor?

Does it hurt more at the beginning of a workout or does it progresses towards the end?

Stress fracture= worse pain as workout progresses

Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome ("shin splints")= beginning/ at rest, stays the same or gets better w/ exercise

Is there a bump?

Stress fracture= yes

MTSS= no

Inside of tibia or front of tibia?

Stress fracture= front

MTSS= inside

Usually tibia stress fractures are higher up then you're describing, you're probably fine, just ice it more/ maybe take a day or two off to cross train if possible?. If the pain is interfering with your runs significantly that's when you go see the Dr

Sounds like stress fracture. I am recovering from one right now. My pain is about 3inches up from the ankle bone.

Unfortunately, the post from drdrcp is not good advice; also unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to find a sports medicince physician or physical therapist that specializes in and understands how stress reactions present and progress to stress fractures. Look for a primary care sports medicine physician rather than an orthopedic surgeon and call around or do an internet search in your area for a physical therapist that specializes in the treatment of runners. In the meantime do not try to run through the pain, even if it feels a little bit better once you get warmed up. Good luck.

It sounds like you're on the stress reaction-fracture continuum and are at the point where you can either take a few weeks off now, or keep running on it and have to take a few months off later.
