This thread isn't really about him, but I was watching the interview with him after Boston and he said he was at 80-85 miles right now, and that he had never run over 100 mpw.
I am not trying to start a training debate and I don't care to hear opinions on that, but I wondered if anyone has ever run 28:27 on the track AND never run over 100mpw for even one week?
Anyone ever know someone who for sure ran that fast and NEVER ran over 100 mpw before they did it? I guess Cheserek is a low-mileage runner, so maybe he is one?
I am surprised that Fox is able to keep them at such low mileages, he was a 100-110 mpw guy in high school in WV.
Why is it a surprise?
There is no single factor that determines performance. Think of every sub 28:00, or 29:00, or whatever bar you want to set. Now think of how diverse that group is. Kenyans who run 130 miles a week, Kenyans who run 80. Americans who run 80, americans who run 120. Canadians who train like Kenyans, Kenyans who train like Japanese, Ethiopians who run like the Dutch.
Don't be surprised that the best runners have figured out what makes them the best, and do that, instead of doing what makes others better. Don't be surprised when a coach figures out what makes their athlete better, instead of doing what made some other athlete better.
