It is all over the place and probably won't help you much. But if enough people tell you then I guess you can average them,
Mid-Major
Head Cross Country/Asst Track
$50,000
As was already mentioned, it varies wildly...I know successful Head Coaches at DI Mid-Majors who make about the same as "unsuccessful" (we'll call it) assistants at Power 5's who've never had an All-American, NCAA qualifier or even conference point scorer. I've been in the game about 10 years now as assistant and head coach - all "DI" - and still haven't broken the "40k barrier."
They don't pay coaches enough. This is the key adult on campus for dozens if not hundreds of kids. They should be making at least what an average professor makes.
You don't really want the average you want the median. The Power 5 make the average much higher than you should expect.
The answer is that if you have to think about the money, you will be better off becoming a teacher and coaching HS.
Coaches at state universities should have their salaries available as public records. What's more interesting is what D1 football and basketball coaches make in revenue sports.
This is hilarious

Most teacher/high school coaches earn more than D1 and 2 coaches. And D3 is a poverty hobby.
I've been asked to teach and coach at local colleges, but I make better scratch and work with better kids at the local public school!
If you are not at an ncaa powerhouse, I hope your wife/husband has a good job.
Looked up the Oklahoma State and Oklahoma coaches and here are what is listed;
Dave Smith - OSU 208,958
Diego Flaquer - OSU 54,967
Robert Lockhart - OSU 90,599
Sean McCabe - OSU 49,255
James Vanhootegem - OU 164,565
Brian Blutreich - OU 100,000
John Dagata - OU 80,380
Jason Dunn - OU 92,754
This is just the coaches in the state of Oklahoma. Seem about right for a power conference.

This is unbelievable. That is so much money (especially for head coaches).
And I assume there are bonuses too?
Most head coaches in the OAC (A d3 conference in ohio) make more than teachers (28k starting salary), they range anywhere from 35-60k with four making more than 50k
Why do you think that is "so much money"? Football and basketball coaches make $1-5 million per year. There are probably high school football coaches making $200k.
Those seem like reasonable salaries for professionals that have some experience, skill, and success in their field.
Beth Sullivan out of University of Tennessee makes 274,000 without bonuses
She racks in a little over 300,000 a year
Average is probably around 130,000 there's a lot of small D1 schools out there
wow that is ridiculous! that is where my tax money goes. Doesn't seem right. I have $100,000 in student loans, work 12 hours a day, make 50,000 a year, pay way too much in taxes, pay $200 a month for health care, and these chumps are getting paid to "coach" running????
pay your taxes!!! wrote:

No they're getting paid to recruit to their university. Coaching is a distant 2nd in their job responsibilities.
