Ok, my friend and I were arguing about this tonight and he said that he thinks that the men's participant shirt world record for the marathon might actually be over 3 hours and I was, like, no way, it's got to be sub-2:30 for sure. Does anyone know? Is it possible that some D-list Kenyan has run a 2:18 in the shirt that came in his swag bag? If so, pics?

Yeah, I want to know how fast Letsrun thinks someone has run a marathon wearing the short- or long-sleeved t-shirt that comes in the event swag bag they give you at the expo.
Wearing the "free" shirt the race gives you is usually a dead giveaway that it's your first marathon and you're in way over your head. At the very least, it shows you're breaking one of the most important rules of marathoning - that you shouldn't wear anything on race day you haven't trained in. But my friend, who's crazy, thinks tons of people have probably gone under 2:30 and I'm, like, uh, no way.
maybe if it was chillier than expected and a fast person forgot a long sleeve so wore the race shirt?
I'd probably split the difference. I ran a 1:16 participation shirt half maration PR as a hard practice when I was on vacation, regular PR 1:07. I ran a marathon for fun in a race and a few times in practice in the 2:45-2:50 range, regular PR 2:23.
You have to find that sweet spot where someone is fast enough they can put up a good time, yet slow enough that they don't care about getting chicked or losing to some bloke just out of college and think the shirt is cool. I'm guessing some 2:18 guy might have ran a 2:40 or so as the participation shirt marathon WR.

I'm assuming that the record does not have to include winning said marathon, correct? (Although, that would be more impressive.)
I agree that it probably has to be sub 2:30. Been around the sport a long time, and can easily see some ironic 24 year old in the 70s, 80s, or 90s wearing the participant shirt on race day and running fast.
Mmm, I know a woman who won a marathon in 2:48 wearing the long sleeve cotton shirt that came in the swag bag. She liked it so she just wore it.

Not quite the same thing, but how about Bill Rodgers in the 1975 Boston Marathon? He ran 2:09:55 in a white T-shirt on which he had written "Boston GBTC."

They did. Participant shirts have been around forever. Well for 40 years or so. And marathon finisher medals were not unheard of, 20 or 30 years ago. What's new are finisher medals for 5K to half marathon and now these are almost the expectation.
In the era of technical race shirts, the answer may be quicker than you want to hear.
Decently fast. In some former communist countries like Ethiopia and China pretty much everybody wears the participant shirt in the race. If you wear the race shirt in the race you are a commie sympathizer who hates individual liberty so I don't care what your marathon record is, personally.

You are adding a lot of requirements that will make the "winner" difficult to confirm. We could have a picture of a guy finishing in 2:30 with the race shirt on, but then we'll still have to figure out if the shirt came in a swag bag, and was obtained at an expo. I don't see how requirements over the exact means by which the shirt was obtained should be a part of it.
