Women's 1500 or 5000.
Too bad you said standard distances only as I have seen a couple times people mention Mo possibly going for the indoor mile world record next season.
I know Usain has also said he still wants sub 19 200 but he hasn't been close to that form in years. If anyone could do it it would be him.
My final answer is the women's 5k though because two girls are super close and I believe their rivalry will push them to it.
this. and possibly men's marathon.
This is an interesting topic and I'm glad you said standard distances only because otherwise it would just be some random event that is hardly ever run (ie the 300, 600, indoor steeplechases or non-standard relays).
I agree that the women's 5000 and 1500 are likely to go down in the near future (Dibaba and Ayana are already close in the 5000 and Dibaba just broke the 1500 while training as a 5000 runner). Men's marathon always a possibility depending on who shows up fit at Berlin.
Two tougher records that I could see going down eventually are the men's 1500 and 400. Asbel Kiprop is getting close in the 1500 and there are so many ridiculously good 400 runners popping up that it's only a matter of time until they get on a really fast track on the right day and it happens.
Bekele's records and Paula's marathon are pretty much untouchable.
Rudisha and Bolt both probably had it in them at some point to go faster than they did, but I think the opportunity has passed and they are too far removed with all their injury issues. They both obviously still have it in them to be the best in the world, but I don't think either is ever going to run faster than they did when they were younger.
One last record I'll mention is the men's steeplechase. I'm actually surprised that record has lasted as long as it has (2004). As recently as 2011 and 2012, Brimin Kipruto missed it by only .01 and Paul Kipsiele Koech was .67 seconds off. In both instances I remember thinking at the time, "Oh damn, he just missed, but I'm sure he'll get it later this season." More than three years later and Shaheen's 7:53.63 still stands.
Flo Jo's 200 legend will be obliterated next spring by pimply Dutch giantess Dafne Schippers

I doubt that looking at how she performed in WC 5,000m and the 3,000m where she was easily beat again
W 1500>M marathon>W 5000

This is the correct answer.
The steeple WR has been scared more times in recent years than any other distance record, BY FAR.
Both Kipruto and Koech have come agonizingly close, and even if not them there are other guys very much on their level right now.
Marathon- Sunday in Berlin.
The answer is W5000. Couple women close and want it.
The W1500 will be around for some time, like it was previously. What we saw was lightning in a bottle, and I bet Dibaba never breaks 3:54 again.
M3000SC will be around a while too. The guys that scared it a few years ago are getting old, the new guys aren't as fast. Jager may seriously regret that fall this year, as with Dibaba, he probably had everything go right until that fall, and that's not something you can keep counting on.
Dafne is a likable chick that her pimples don't turn me off.
200m. Bolt says he wants to break 19 next year. Sounds like a plan to me.
Or you are dumb enough to believe him.
Men's 100m. Gatlin next year at the Olympics. It's happening. He's determined and focused.
1500m, Asbel Kiprop.
El Guerrouj's 1500m record would be the most likely, obviously Kiprop would be the one to break it. I think his Mile WR is safe for quite awhile as the Mile is rarely run, and Kiprop doesn't show the same comfort level running that event vs. the 1500m. I would like to see Kiprop take aim at Ngeny's 1000m WR also. Mahkloufi ran a 2:13.09 and ran over 2 seconds slower than Kiprop over 1500m this season, and his PR over 800m is slower than Kiprop's. I think he could legitimately take those two records if he had ideal racing conditions and pacers.
If there's a record that's going to be broken before next May, it's the men's marathon. That record has been broken at Berlin 3 of the last 4 years.
Kipchoge is gonna break it on Sunday.
If Wayde Van Niekerk improves by half as much as he did this year (.9) he could break Michael Johnson's 400 WR.
