More importantly, what handle does Gladwell use when he trolls letsrun.com?
My guess is Hingle. It's how he lets out his inner conservative.
Bad Wigins is fast
I enjoyed hearing him on the radio today discussing the story of David and Goliath.
Another fine performance for him at the 5th Ave. Mile. In the 50s, still approaching 5 flat puts him up there.
between yoru 2 weird fetishes, pimping MG and bashing NOP/Rupp you must be nearly blind dude. You're good a typing with one hand though, I'll give you that.
Nice work, Bad Wigins!

What is this race like for a guy running in the range 4:30-5:00?
(How many people per heat? Likely to get a good race?)
It seems like a pretty amazing thing if everyone gets to run a fast mile racing people their speed. But if there are more than 30 starting together, does it work?
That is really good!

The heats are very big - like, 500 - 1000 - so it's important to start up front if you're planning to run the kind of time you're talking about. Even then, it can be somewhat crowded, especially during the first 1/4 mile or so. On the other hand, it's a great atmosphere and an amazing view straight down 5th Ave [if you can manage to enjoy it as the hypoxia sets in...]
Bad Wigins = Malcolm Gladwell???
Next year Gladwell, next year.
He ran a 4:05 1500 in HS, which is about a 4:22 mile. So, he has slowed down about 40 seconds, which is pretty good for someone aged 52.
Really a good run. I'm a bit jealous, having topped out at 5:29 in that age category.

500-1000? Shoot.
Is it chip-timed?

Well, Gladwell ran like 5:02 last year and 5:03 this year so it seems like it's possible to race close to your best. (Assuming he's consistently hitting his best and not consistently the same amount off it.)
