Would running twice a day for the next two weeks help me perform better in this upcoming race? Assuming no injury could occur.
Would running twice a day for the next two weeks help me perform better in this upcoming race? Assuming no injury could occur.
No.
Why?
Not as much as running that much for a period of three months will. This is like the Mo Farah thread asking about how much he'll train before a race a few weeks from now. The common wisdom is that your workouts can still improve you slightly until about 10 days out. Between then and race day you may be able to alter your weight or make your legs feel more suited to race paces, but you won't really improve your aerobic engine in any way.
As a rule of thumb, though, I recommend increasing your running in general, worry less about this race, and then a few months from now enjoying seeing a real improvement instead of a 1 second improvement.
From what I have read on here it takes about 2 weeks to accrue any benefit from any specific training. I am not sure I totally agree with it but it is probably true to a degree. I would suggest just doing some fairly intense strides to get your legs ready to go on race day.
If you have a way to make sure no injury can occur, you shouldn't worry about a race in two weeks, you need to write a book and make mega-bucks.
More seriously, it depends on how much you have been running and how often. If you have been running twice a day for the last 3 months then adding another two weeks won't make much difference. If you haven't run in the last 3 months, then running twice a day for the next two weeks is less likely to lead to injury than running the same mileage in singles. If you have been running singles and you up your mileage by running 3 miles every morning, your improvement will depend on how hard/much you were running in the singles.
The 10 days to two weeks is for full benefits. Partial benefits count.
For example I've done a first race of the year and felt rusty and just two days later done a much faster time. Not two weeks, two days.
