Who do you think is the most overrated writer?
I vote Kerouac. Just an alcoholic hipster.

Alcoholism tend to be a rather common trait among novelists and playwrights.

John L. Parker
John Updike.
Hemingway. Never understood the hype.
Flannery O'Conner. Or possibly Tolstoy. Wow, that cat is long-winded.

You know nothing of Kerouac or his work. An alcoholic but not a hipster.
Luke Rhinehart
Was really looking forward to The Dice Man but a massive let down
Did not like the style of writing. However, worst of all for someone living their life on the role of a dice wast to find half way through the book the guy still doing the same job
Flannery O'Connor is the greatest writer of fiction America has produced.
Kurt Vonnegut wrote one very good book and several terrible ones.
Ummm....Cornell West? Maya Angelou?
John Kennedy Toole.
Tolkien
When I was in my teens and twenties I read Hemingway and, like you, did not see what the hype was about.
I just read "For Whom the Bell Tolls" this summer - in my sixties - and I was blown away by his writing.
There is an essential realness in Hemingway's writing that gives an inner glimpse into the mind that resonates as true or right, not as an absolute, but rather as a reflection of him as a man. That earnestness is rare, as so many authors write in a fabricated or imitative voice.
There is an undercurrent that hints of his eventual suicide throughout the book, while the main spirit is one of courage and strength/purity of character required to live life well.

Man oh man, I just finished War and Peace, and I really want to disagree with you. Sure it was long, and it took a while to get settled as he built the characters and established the path of the book, but once I got settled, I couldn't put the book down. Which was a problem, because it's really freaking long!
A second vote for Hemingway.
(I guess if you have a short attention span Tolstoy could seem long-winded)
(Or as Elaine said, "War... what is it good for?")
