I am a junior at a D2 college and I trust my coach a lot with my 800 meter training. I don't run cross and we train for track in the fall and start competing in the winter. Traditionally, we have always trained where during the fall we build up some base and do higher volume workouts and then start doing more speed as the winter approaches/into the spring. I am much more of a lower volume 800 runner and do best when I have more track workouts instead of logging a lot of miles. However, our head coach is putting a heavy emphasis on the 4x4 this year and wants my 800 coach to tailor our workouts more towards the 400. Let me just say the 800 is definitely my best event, but our coach showed us what our workouts would look like and they are all VERY low volume and very fast throughout the entire fall. I'm talking like a couple 150s or 200s at low volume, high rest, and high speed. I've never trained for the 800 like this and I am really worried I won't have the endurance I need and it's too much speed too soon. Is this a legitimate alternative way to actually train for the 800? I hate posting this because I truly do trust my coach but I'm worried my head coach is making him do this. Any advice? Anyone else train this way where you do speed first?
