I ran my first marathon on Sunday hoping to run ~2:45.
Previously, I have run the half marathon in 1:16 with very low volume training (25-30 mpw), 6 miles (road) in 31:50, 5K in 16:14 and 2 miles in 9:38, so I figured I was in shape for a 2:45.
My training consisted of 50-60 mpw for about 8 weeks with 1 "long run" per week ranging from 15-20 miles and either a medium length tempo run (i.e. 6 miles at 5:45 pace) or intervals 4 x mile in 5:25 with 3 min rest or 10 x 800 in 2:35 w/2 min rest. I tapered by reducing my mileage to 40 and then 30 for the two weeks prior to the race and carbo loaded for the last 72 hours. I felt fresh at the start and ready to click off 6:20 pace for the marathon.
I was right on 6:20 pace through 15 miles, feeling strong. Earlier in the race (at mile 7 I tried to take my first gel, as I had planned on taking 3 gels during the race) and immediately gagged on it and then proceeded to throw it up. After that I didn't want to risk taking another gel which may have been a mistake, so I relied on the occasional swig of gatorade/water at the aid stations. By mile 18, I started to feel week and my pace began to slow, even though I felt good aerobically. I felt like I was now running with led boots. By mile 21 I contemplated dropping out, as I felt like I would pass out. I stopped at an aid station at mile 22 and quickly drank 4 cups of gatorade. I felt slightly more energized and was able to drag myself to the finish at like 7:30 pace for a finishing time of 2:55. Any advice for how to approach my next marathon?
