Guarantee he could run 12:50, 7:28, and 3:29 if he saw any reason to expend energy on a paced diamond league off-distance.

Logically - he should be at least 7.35 for 3000 flat, and this means corresponding times of 3.33/3.34 and 12.55-13.00.
Compared to other runners he expends less energy over the barriers, even though his form is less than perfect.

steeplers are the masterrace of track running, he ran the other distance not seriously... You see how much worth a serious good 1500 pr in steeple is (jager) ?
