Wow...great finish diving at the line.
Wow...great finish diving at the line.
Great celebration by Huddle of her bron..... oh, 4th place ;-)
Did Molly think she had medaled?
Universal Sports interviewed Huddle moments after the race and despite her disappointment she was a class act, as usual.
Who did Huddle think she is? Steve Ovett?
Arms in the air in celebration as she crossed the 2m-before-the-line finishing line, only to spot Infield coming up on the, er, infield
I've never seen something similar in a 10k WC's final.
That's why some HS coaches are so angry about athletes don't diving at the line.
My theory is that professionals don't get enough practice doing stupid stuff (tripping, celebrating, bad leans, running/passing on the rail, etc.) so when they do it's on the biggest stage at the worst time with the worst consequences.
Also goes to show how seldom coaches actually reinforce the little stuff. And what's more, seeing how regimented and disciplined "the team" is in the weeks, days, and hours before the events, it's bizarre that the athletes screw up something so trivial in their races. Bizarre, but pretty damned human.
Ugh.
I hated to see that. Huddle did the work to distance the field and she had had such a fantastic year. However, you have the rest of your life to celebrate a medal, if you get it. You always have got to run hard through the line and lean, especially with a gutsy challenger in Infeld, who never quits, right behind you. Huddle blew it, pure and simple, but I hope she'll have another chance at a medal next year in Rio, where it'll be even hotter and more humid probably.
Huddle did the same thing at XC nationals in 2012. She was running neck and neck with Sara Hall, threw up her arms a second before crossing the tape and got beat.

The fotofinish is hilarious.

There is no reason Huddle should have been passed like that unless simply she ran out of gas, but we all know that's not what happened. With her experience and all the high caliber races she has been in, she's one of the last people you would expect to let that happen. That's one of the first things that young runners are taught, to run through the line at the finish, and seeing this happen is disheartening.
Also, her interview didn't come off so classy to me as was previously stated. You could tell she was a little bitter about the way things ended up, and it almost sounded like she was selling Infeld short, acting like she was only there because the race didn't go out super fast. Maybe it's true, and maybe it isn't, but we'll never know and Emily Infeld beat out Molly Huddle for the bronze world champs medal, and that's really the only thing that matters.
Anybody got a link to the universal sports interview with Molly?
I hope they are not sharing a room---awkward

Agreed. It wasn't overly bitter, but she came off more as "It's BS I didn't get that medal" compared to "Oops I made a mistake and paid the price".
It's totally understandable. This was minutes after losing out on a WC medal when she should have won one - something you train your whole life for. But I wouldn't describe the interview as "classy".
Still a fan though

Why the heck did she move out to lane 2?
Women runners are always doing this and getting passed this way.

I suppose I don't understand the point of "celebrating" coming in third (ostensibly, in this case), medal or no, in the first place.
For someone to be satisfied with one's performance, with, say, winning a bronze medal, sure, I get that. But to celebrate on the track the moment of one's achievement, when that achievement isn't actually winning race? I don't get that.
Truly, the self-absorption of athletes today is remarkable.
I was watching the race live at practice this morning. It was a great lesson for the kids I coach. One, finish the race so you don\\\'t get beat. Two, the person in front of you might take 3 easy steps and you can beat them! Emily deserves credit for not going in easy and believing that she could beat her. Its the 10,000m race, not the 9,995m race...
The first mistake was Infeld hugging the rail down the stretch behind Huddle instead of going around her.
The second mistake was Huddle finally letting her through!
