I run for a HS team and we train freaking weird, in my opinion. We do a good amount of intervals, no big deal, but whenever we go out on a road run we almost never take it easy. We have guys who think going 100% race pace in practice is a great idea, and at the slowest for guys running in the low-mid 18s for 5k they do a lot of their runs at around 6:20-6:40 pace, in that range.
I've read a lot about training in books and on this site, and this just seems to go against almost everything I've heard about training. 25 mpw for a 5k, a tempo run of 2-4 miles three or five times a week, and no long run or easy aerobic runs, besides on the day before races or the day after a "tougher" practice. I say tougher in quotes because what is considered our hardest workout of the year is 3xmile at about 5k pace. I run a lot extra on my own, but it can be a hassle and I just feel like I could be training so much better.
I want to talk to my coach about what I feel is wrong, but I don't want to sound like a douche who thinks he knows everything. I just feel like the tempos all the time will make me stale, and I feel like the amount of intervals and the almost-full recovery we get almost every time just isn't challenging enough. What should I say? If any of you have been through this please let me know what you said and what happened. Thank you for helping me out in advance. This is really important to me and I just want to do perform as best I can in HS.
